The Basics of the Sky

The sky is like a giant, ever-changing movie screen that stretches over the entire world. It’s where all our weather happens! To understand the sky, we have to look at the three big layers that make it work:

The Atmosphere

Think of this as a big, invisible blanket made of air that wraps around the Earth. It keeps us warm, helps us breathe, and is where clouds live.

Water Vapor

Even when the sky looks empty, there is invisible water floating all around us. When that water gets cold and bunches together, it turns into the clouds you see every day!

The Sun

This is the giant engine of our weather! The Sun’s heat warms up the air in the atmosphere, which causes the wind to blow and the water to move.

Next time you go outside, look up! Can you see the Atmosphere working?

  • If the trees are moving, you’re feeling the air move.

  • If you see white fluffy shapes, you’re seeing Water Vapor bunching together.

  • If you feel warmth on your skin? You’re feeling the Sun’s energy.
